In the month of December
2005 we adopted Chip. (Chip's Chinese name is: 小片,
after all, Chip is part Chinese Chow Chow) He was brought home on
December 22nd around 6PM. By 9AM December 23rd, he made a "great
escape" by nudging the window open, jumping up the window sill,
pawing through the screen, and ultimately landing himself immediately
back at the animal shelter.
After a pleasant phone call
from animal control, I went to pick Chip up at the shelter on December
23rd @ 3PM. Therefore it is December 23, 2005 that we officially
celebrate Chip's "permanent" move-in day with us.

I spent
Winter Break getting Chip comfortable with us. My brother even got
his friend, Lauren, to help us. She gave us the basics on how to
walk and train Chip to behave.

Then
in January, Chip enrolled in dog-obedience class. By March 3, 2006
Chip won 1st place as the most obedient dog of his class.

According
to the vet, Chip is a two year old chow chow/german shepherd mix
- mostly chow chow. However Chip doesn't act like a chow chow. When
he's in guarding mode, he huffs, puffs, and growls like a german
shepherd. Chip RARELY barks. For a 60 pound dog, I'm happy
that he rarely barks.

Chip's DNA
cheek swab test returned on November 7, 2007. According to the
test, Chip is less than 50% Chow Chow! He also has a tint of Yorkshire
Terrier! There is a big part of him that the test could not determine,
so now we have to wait for the DNA
blood test in order to get the full results on Chip's background.

Chip's Mars
Wisdom Panel DNA blood test was returned on May 14, 2008. According
to this new test, Chip is mostly Chow Chow. His great grand-parents
consists of a full-blooded Greyhound and an Australian Shepherd.

In June 2008, we re-took the Canine
Heritage DNA Cheek Swab Test. We decided to do this because
of the discrepencies between the original cheek swab test and the
Wisdom Panel Blood DNA test. Also the Canine Heritage DNA test recently
expanded their detectable breeds. So are waiting patiently for the
new results.

Chip
is also very well-mannered and polite. He never rushes his food
bowl, no matter how hungry he is. Chip will always wait for the
"ok" signal before he eats. He's also very patient around
kids and tolerates a lot of abuse from kids without ever getting
upset or offended.
Chip
is also very organized with his toys. The toys generally end up
back in his doggie bed. His favorite toys are squeakers. If it squeaks,
he loves it.
